At Best Friends Fur Ever, some of the most inspiring dogs we care for don’t run the fastest, jump the highest, or play the longest.

But they teach us the most. On Specially-Abled Pets Day, we’re taking a moment to recognize the dogs who navigate the world a little differently—and the people who love them through it all.

Because behind every specially-abled dog is a story of resilience, adaptation, and trust. And we’re honored to be part of that story.

Care That Meets Them Where They Are

Not every dog thrives in a traditional environment—and that’s okay.

Through our Assisted Canine Care (ACC) and ACC+ programs, we’ve built something intentional: a space where dogs with medical, physical, or neurological needs are supported with patience, structure, and understanding.

This isn’t just about supervision.

It’s about:

  • Knowing when a dog needs rest instead of stimulation
  • Recognizing subtle changes in behavior or health
  • Providing consistency in an environment that can otherwise feel overwhelming

For many families, it becomes a lifeline, whether they’re traveling, managing daily care, or simply needing a moment to recharge.

The Dogs Who Inspire Us Every Day

Each dog we care for brings something unique—and unforgettable.

There’s Delta, who navigates the world from her wheelchair with determination that stops you in your tracks. She doesn’t slow down—she just moves differently.

Gus Gus, with hydrocephalus (“water on the brain”) and a history of seizures, reminds us how important attentiveness and calm, structured care can be. His resilience is quiet, but powerful.

Layla, who lives with vestibular syndrome, has taught us patience in motion—finding her balance, quite literally, in her own time.

Jesper, managing heart disease, shows us that gentle care and thoughtful pacing can make all the difference in a dog’s quality of life.

Piccolino, who is blind, navigates through trust—relying on consistency, scent, and the people around him to feel safe.

Hiccup, with IVDD, reminds us how fragile mobility can be and how important it is to protect and support it every single day.

And Milo, our three-legged wonder, who proves that sometimes losing something doesn’t take away joy—it just reshapes it.

To the Pet Parents Walking This Journey

We see you.

Caring for a specially-abled dog can be overwhelming. It can be emotional. It can be unpredictable. There are vet visits, adjustments, fears, and a constant need to advocate for what your dog needs. But there’s also an incredible bond—one built on trust, patience, and love in its purest form. We admire that deeply. And we don’t take lightly the trust you place in us when you allow us to care for your dog.

More Than Care—A Place to Belong

Every dog deserves a place where they are not just accommodated—but understood. Where differences aren’t limitations, they’re simply part of who they are.

That’s what we strive to create every day. Not just a service. Not just a program. But a space where dogs like Delta, Gus Gus, Layla, Jesper, Piccolino, Hiccup, and Milo are celebrated exactly as they are.

Today, and every day, we celebrate them.
