If your dog hears the word “daycare” and is already halfway to the car, you probably know the type.
They love other dogs. They thrive on play, have canine best friends and come home from a great day happy and ready to recharge.
For social dogs, daycare can provide an outlet for exercise, enrichment and the opportunity to do something dogs naturally enjoy: interact with other dogs.
But not all dog daycare looks the same.
At Best Friends Fur Ever (BFFE) in Joppa and Cockeysville, Maryland, our Social Group Play program is built around something we believe is incredibly important: A great day of daycare includes both play AND rest.
What Is Rotational Dog Daycare?
Some pet parents imagine dog daycare as dogs playing continuously for eight or ten hours.
That’s not how we structure Social Group Play at BFFE.
Our dogs follow a rotational play schedule, moving between supervised social play periods and structured rest throughout the day.
Why? Because even the biggest social butterfly needs a break.
Rest gives dogs an opportunity to decompress, recharge and prepare for their next play session rather than remaining continuously stimulated throughout the entire day.
Think about your own dog at home. Even on a really fun day, they’re probably not running around for eight straight hours. Daycare shouldn’t require that either.
How Are BFFE Social Playgroups Created?
A great playgroup isn’t simply a room full of dogs.
Our team considers factors such as a dog’s size, energy level, personality and play style when determining appropriate social groups.
A young dog who wants to wrestle and run may have a very different idea of fun than a dog who prefers a slower-paced social experience. The goal isn’t to create the biggest group.
It’s to create a group where dogs can have a good day together.
Our handlers supervise play and get to know the individual dogs in their groups — their friendships, preferences, energy and communication styles.
And yes, there are plenty of BFFE besties.
Does My Dog Need a Social Evaluation?
Because Social Group Play involves interacting with other dogs, dogs entering the program complete BFFE’s social evaluation process.
It gives our team an opportunity to get to know your dog and determine whether Social Group Play is an appropriate fit.
But here’s something important:
Not passing — or simply not being suited for — traditional group play doesn’t mean a dog can’t enjoy daycare at BFFE.
We offer multiple care programs because dogs are individuals.
Our Play My Way program, for example, does not require a Social Group Play temperament evaluation and provides a completely different daycare experience.
Can My Dog Board and Still Play With Friends?
Absolutely. Social dogs staying overnight can continue enjoying play as part of their BFFE boarding experience.
That means a vacation for you doesn’t have to mean your dog’s normal routine comes to a halt.
They can spend their days playing, resting and seeing their BFFE friends before settling in for the night with 24/7 onsite supervision.
Is Social Dog Daycare Right for My Dog?
Social Group Play may be a great fit for a dog who:
- genuinely enjoys interacting with other dogs
- is comfortable in a group environment
- enjoys active play and social engagement
- benefits from having an outlet for energy
- can comfortably transition between activity and rest
But being a dog doesn’t automatically mean loving other dogs.
And that’s okay. Some dogs would rather play one-on-one with a human. Some prefer a few carefully selected friends. Some become less interested in group play as they age.
That’s why choosing daycare should be about finding your dog’s version of a good day, not fitting every dog into the same program.
What Kind of Dog Daycare Is Best for My Dog?
That’s the better question. At Best Friends Fur Ever, we’ve developed different programs for dogs with very different needs:
Social Group Play: “I LOVE other dogs. Where are my friends?”
Play My Way: “Big social groups aren’t really my thing. Can we do something else?”
Assisted Canine Care: “I’m getting older or need a little extra help.”
ACC+ Recovery Care: “I’m recovering and need specialized support while my family can’t be home.”
