Leptospirosis protection has always been required—but changes in veterinary vaccines may leave some dogs unprotected. Learn how to check your dog’s records and stay compliant.

At Best Friends Fur Ever, the health and safety of every dog in our care is always our top priority. Recently, we’ve had more conversations with pet parents about the Leptospirosis (Lepto) vaccine—and we want to take a moment to clarify what’s going on and what it means for you and your dog.

First, Let’s Clear Something Up

Leptospirosis has always been a required vaccine for dogs attending daycare, boarding, and grooming with us.

So what’s changed?

It’s not the requirement—it’s how some veterinary practices are administering vaccines.

Why This Is Coming Up More Often

For many years, Lepto was commonly included in a combination vaccine your dog may have received annually.

However, we’re now seeing more veterinarians administer:

  • DHPP or DAPP vaccines (which protect against Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza)
  • With Lepto given as a separate vaccine

Because of this shift, some dogs who are “up to date” on vaccines may not actually be protected against Lepto.

How to Know If Your Dog Is Protected

Your dog meets our requirement if they have Lepto coverage in one of the following ways:

A combination vaccine that includes Lepto
(often listed as DHLPP or DAPP-L)

OR

A separate Leptospirosis vaccine given in addition to DHPP or DAPP

If your dog’s records show only DHPP or DAPP, it’s a good idea to check with your veterinarian to confirm whether Lepto was administered separately.

Why Lepto Protection Matters—Especially Here

Leptospirosis is a contagious disease that can spread through:

  • Wildlife exposure (such as raccoons or rodents)
  • Standing water
  • Shared outdoor environments

Because our dogs enjoy outdoor play, enrichment, and fresh air, this added protection is especially important in keeping:

  • Dogs safe and healthy
  • Our team protected
  • Our entire community safe

What You Should Do Next

If you’re unsure whether your dog is protected against Lepto, here are your next steps:

  • Reach out to your veterinarian to review your dog’s vaccine history
  • Schedule the Lepto vaccine if needed
  • Upload updated records before your next visit
