Who Should You Trust With Your Dog Overnight? A Maryland Pet Parent’s Guide

A boarding resort, a pet sitter, or someone in your family? The right answer depends on more than where your dog will sleep.

Each has advantages. Each has limitations. The question isn’t who loves dogs the most. It’s who is best prepared to care for yours.

1. Boarding, Pet Sitter, or Family Member: What’s the Difference?

A trusted family member or experienced pet sitter may be a wonderful choice for some dogs. But when comparing overnight care, it’s important to understand who’s responsible, what training they have, how your dog’s day will be structured, and what happens if something doesn’t go as planned.

At Best Friends Fur Ever, our PackPro certification, trained caregivers, four distinct care programs, and 24/7 onsite presence are part of a larger commitment: making informed decisions based on the needs of the individual dog.

2. The Questions That Matter More Than Price

Before leaving your dog with anyone, ask:

Who is physically there overnight?

Does someone sleep onsite? Are they awake throughout the night? What happens if your dog needs attention? Those are different arrangements, and you should understand which one you’re choosing.

What happens if my dog’s behavior changes?

A dog who suddenly refuses food, becomes withdrawn, or reacts differently to another dog may need more than reassurance.

Who recognizes those changes? Who decides what happens next?

What experience does the caregiver have with dogs like mine?

A young, social dog has different needs from a senior dog with mobility challenges or a dog who becomes overwhelmed around unfamiliar animals.

What happens if something goes wrong?

Ask how concerns are documented, when you’ll be contacted, and how veterinary attention is arranged.

What will my dog actually do all day?

Will they receive supervised activities, walks, enrichment, rest, or individual attention? How often? Who determines what’s appropriate?

These questions matter whether you’re considering a boarding resort, a pet sitter, or someone you know personally.

3. What Does Professional Care Look Like at Best Friends Fur Ever?

At Best Friends Fur Ever, we believe caring for dogs takes more than loving them.

It takes training, experience, an understanding of canine behavior, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions.

Here’s how that philosophy shapes our boarding experience.

We Don’t Put Every Dog Into the Same Program.

Our guests participate in one of four care programs:

  • Social Play: Supervised group activities with dogs matched by size, energy, and play style.
  • Play My Way: Individual attention, enrichment, outdoor time, and sibling play without requiring a group-play temperament test.
  • Assisted Canine Care: A quieter environment and additional support for seniors and dogs with special needs.
  • ACC+: Structured supportive care for eligible, medically stable dogs recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions. Available at Cockeysville only.

A dog who doesn’t enjoy group play isn’t a failure. They may simply need a different environment.

Someone Is Physically Onsite Overnight.

At both BFFE resorts, caregivers are onsite 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Care continues beyond the front desk’s operating hours, including evening and early-morning routines, observation, and attention when guests need assistance.

Both resorts also have backup generators to help maintain continuity of care during power outages.

What does 24/7 mean? Physical onsite caregiver presence—not unrestricted lobby access or a promise that every dog is watched continuously.

We Match Overnight Accommodations to Care Needs.

Each care program includes standard overnight accommodations appropriate to that program.

At Cockeysville, eligible guests can also choose private Premium Lodging, including Lux Suites and Petite Suites.

The goal isn’t to sell every dog the most expensive room. It’s to find accommodations that make sense for their needs.

We Take Changes in a Dog’s Condition Seriously.

If a guest isn’t acting like themselves, the responsibility isn’t simply to wait and hope everything is fine.

Our team follows care procedures for observation, communication, and determining when veterinary attention may be necessary.

Good care includes knowing when to ask questions, when to contact a pet parent, and when to act.

4. Before You Book: Five Things to Confirm

Use this checklist with any overnight-care provider:

  • Caregiver presence: Who will be there overnight, and what does their presence involve?
  • Experience: What training or relevant experience do the caregivers have?
  • Daily routine: What will my dog do, and how are rest and activities managed?
  • Health and communication: How are concerns handled, and when will I be contacted?
  • Requirements and cost: What vaccines, assessments, fees, and restrictions apply?

You should be able to get clear answers before making a reservation.

5. How Do I Get Started With Boarding at BFFE?

Getting started is simple.

Create your BFFE Gingr Pet Parent account, share your dog’s information, upload vaccination records, and request your boarding dates.

BFFE requires Rabies, Distemper combination (DHPP/DAPP/DHLPP), Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Canine Influenza (CIV), with applicable age and timing requirements. Some vaccines require multiple doses and waiting periods, so check your records early.

Social Play requires a group-play assessment. Play My Way does not.
