If you’ve stepped outside this week, you already know: it is cold.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Alert for parts of Maryland through Monday, and we know many pet parents in Cockeysville, Harford County, and the Greater Baltimore area are wondering what this means for dog daycare and boarding.

At Best Friends Fur Ever, your dog’s safety and comfort always come first. During extreme cold weather, we make a few adjustments to our routine so every pup stays warm, healthy, and happy.

What This Cold Weather Means for Dogs in Our Care

Whether your pup is here for daycare or staying overnight, our team will be following cold-weather safety protocols across both of our locations.

1. Potty Breaks Are Short and Safe

During extreme cold, dogs will still go outside for bathroom breaks, but those breaks will be quick. Once they’re done, they come right back inside where it’s warm.

This helps protect dogs from:

  • freezing paws

  • uncomfortable wind chill

  • cold-related stress

  • stiffness in older dogs or dogs with joint sensitivity

2. Indoor Play Becomes the Main Event

Even in winter, dogs still need exercise and social time. That doesn’t stop just because the temperatures drop.

Instead of extended outdoor play, we shift to indoor play and enrichment so dogs can still burn energy safely without being exposed to harsh Maryland weather.

3. Our Resorts Stay Warm and Temperature-Controlled

Both of our Best Friends Fur Ever locations are fully temperature-controlled and kept warm all day and night.

So if you’re worried about your dog being cold while they’re here, you can rest easy—they’ll be cozy and comfortable throughout their stay.

4. Sweaters and Winter Coats Are Welcome

If your dog wears a sweater or coat at home, feel free to send it with them. We’re happy to use it for potty breaks, especially for dogs who tend to get cold quickly.

This is especially helpful for:

  • puppies

  • small dogs

  • short-haired breeds

  • senior dogs

  • dogs with medical needs

5. Backup Generators for Peace of Mind

Winter weather in Maryland can sometimes mean power outages. Our resorts are backed up by generators in the event of an outage, so our facilities stay safe, operational, and warm.

Not Feeling Like Braving the Cold? We Get It.

If you’re a pet parent in Cockeysville, Harford County, or Baltimore County, you may be dealing with freezing temperatures, icy sidewalks, or the stress of bundling up for potty breaks multiple times a day.

If you’re worried about the warmth of your home, or you just don’t feel like battling the cold this weekend, we’re here to help.

We’ll keep your pup:

  • safe

  • warm

  • supervised

  • active indoors

  • and having a great day
