With temperatures expected to climb into the mid-90s, our team is following our Category 3 Extreme Heat Protocol to help every pup stay safe, comfortable, and cool.
Here’s what that looks like:
• Frequent outdoor potty breaks limited to approximately 15 minutes or less, with even shorter outings for our brachycephalic (short-nosed) friends like Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers.
• Before every potty break, our handlers hose down outdoor surfaces to make ground temperatures safe for paw pads.
• As soon as potty breaks are finished, it’s back inside for air-conditioned play and enrichment.
• Every outdoor yard offers plenty of shade, fresh water, and pools so pups can cool off when they’re outside.
Did you know? We even offer dog-safe sunscreen for pups with light-colored noses, thin coats, or sensitive skin. Dogs can get sunburned, too.
A quick reminder for pet parents at home:
While the air temperature may read 96°F, asphalt and concrete can reach 140–160°F in direct sunlight. At those temperatures, paw pads can burn in under a minute.
If you need to walk your dog this weekend, aim for early morning or later in the evening when surfaces have had time to cool. A good rule of thumb: if it’s too hot for the back of your hand after seven seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

We’ll continue adjusting our routines throughout the weekend to keep every dog safe while making sure they still enjoy a fun, enriching day.
Whether your pup is joining us for daycare or boarding this summer, our team is committed to providing a safe, comfortable environment during Maryland’s hottest days. Best Friends Fur Ever proudly serves families in Joppa, Cockeysville, Harford County, and the greater Baltimore area.
