As compassionate dog care professionals, the health and safety of dogs is our #1 priority. This includes not only exceeding kennel cleanliness standards, but also keeping pet parents up to date with important news in the dog world. Therefore, it is imperative that we acknowledge and share the news regarding a “mysterious” upper respiratory infection circulating in the United States.
This virus is reportedly new to veterinarians, but it presents similar to Kennel Cough. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, discharge from the eyes and nose, and lethargy. According to recent news reports, unlike Kennel Cough, this new virus does not respond to the standard antibiotics that are routinely prescribed for Kennel Cough, making it potentially more difficult to treat. Additionally, several dogs have developed pneumonia from this new virus, which can potentially be fatal, especially if not treated promptly. Vets suggest paying close attention to any developing cold symptoms, including a persistent cough and loss of appetite, and added, “Don’t panic,” dog owners should make sure that their pets are up to date on vaccines, including those that protect against various respiratory illnesses.
Best Friends Fur Ever has NOT recorded any cases of this new virus at our resorts.
To date, no cases have been reported in Maryland; however, we want to make sure pet parents are aware of this and are taking appropriate measures to keep their beloved pups safe.
Out of an abundance of caution, effective December 1st, 2023, we are no longer accepting waivers for dogs who are unvaccinated against or have expired Canine Influenza or Canine Parainfluenza Virus vaccines. Please contact your vet or find a local clinic to get your dog vaccinated. As always, the Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella vaccines are 100% required to enter our resorts.
In addition, effective Tuesday, November 21st, forward, our resorts will be conducting Intake Health Checks for all dogs checking in for daycare, boarding, training, and/or grooming. We are checking for any visible symptoms, including coughing, sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nose, and/or uncharacteristic lethargy. Any dogs displaying these symptoms will not be allowed to utilize our services and we recommend you seek medical attention from your veterinarian. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, however, it is imperative that we do our best to safeguard your pet and all other pets visiting our resorts.
Please reach out to us via phone at 410-773-7529 or email customerservice@bestfriendsfurever.com if you have any questions or concerns. We will continue to keep you updated on any changes regarding this illness.
