Welcome back to another edition of Happy Training Tip Tuesday! This week, our expert trainer Olivia Steinrock is here to help you tackle a common but challenging puppy behavior: nipping and mouthing. We know how frustrating those sharp little teeth can be, so we’ve put together three simple steps to help reduce this naughty behavior and turn your playful pup into a well-mannered companion.

Step 1: Redirect Their Attention

Puppies often nip and mouth because they’re teething or just exploring their world. Instead of letting them use your fingers as chew toys, redirect their attention to appropriate items. Keep a variety of chew toys on hand, and whenever your puppy starts to nip, gently remove your hand and offer a toy instead. This teaches them what’s acceptable to bite.

Step 2: Use Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is key to effective training. When your puppy stops nipping, reward them with praise, treats, or a favorite toy. Consistently rewarding good behavior will help your puppy understand that gentle play leads to positive outcomes. Remember, patience is crucial – it might take some time, but your pup will learn!

Step 3: Teach the “No Bite” Command

Consistency and clear communication are essential. Teach your puppy the “No Bite” command by using a firm but calm voice whenever they nip. Follow this with the redirection method and positive reinforcement. Over time, your puppy will learn to associate the command with stopping the nipping behavior.

Puppy nipping and mouthing can be a real challenge, but with patience and these simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to a well-behaved pup. Remember, every puppy learns at their own pace, so stay consistent and positive.
