Many people rely on travel and vacation to decompress and take care of their mental health. That’s extremely important — especially now.

AAA Travel & Insurance Centers are saying it’s a good idea to get out of town — but not too far out of town. Clients are opting for driving vacations to some destinations up to eight hours away.  Sorry airlines . . . for now.

Road trips are topping the list for travelers this summer as regions across the area are reopening. Looking for unique destinations, here are trends AAA Centers are seeing:

  • Short road trips are picking up – day or long weekend trips.
  • Outdoor-oriented activities, national parks and state parks remain popular as tourists enjoy camping, hiking and nature.
  • Short weekend trips will be combined with longer road trips this summer
    • East coast beaches, national parks, southern destinations, historical sites, and theme parks are all popular with families.
    • Private homes and villas are popular along with resorts in domestic destinations.
  • Motorists are purchasing E-Z Pass tags as they prepare for road trips and cashless tolling up and down the I-95 Mid-Atlantic corridor this summer.
  • It is also recommended travelers research travel insurance as well as read the fine print in all cancellation policies to protect their investments should circumstances change with the family or destination during the summer months.

AAA does expect domestic air travel to rebound later this summer, followed eventually by international travel. They have already seen demand for cruise bookings for the fall months and reservations for 2021 cruises are on the rise as well.

This summer may be the most unpredictable for travel in a generation, but attention to the fine print, insurance, and a little common sense will get you through it.

Oh, and don’t forget to have fun!
